I know you want to wax your door and I`m thinking the makers have had problems. I have recently been working on our wooden doors - I would recommend visiting a good decorators such as brewers and get some decorators vanish in dead flat matt finish. This will seal the door and keep moisture out but not leave a shiny. If you stain them, you still need to put varnish or polyurethane on them. It depends on the color that you want.
