How to remove paint from concrete window sills

The outside window sills in my house are concrete plinths and have been painted in the past. If you look at the top photo, you can see that all of the window sills and all of the horizontal trim has been painted white.


The client wants all his stone sills and mullions stripped of all the old peeling, but still hard and brittle, masonry paint off. Or has anyone tried a heat gun to do this. Problem is, i have scraped and lifted all the old flaking paint off ready to paint but there are loads that will not budge! So, as you can imagine, lots of craters and hollows.


Window sills and wall cappings are notorious for peeling paint problems. There is a perfect answer to this problem and it works every time. The method I used was just hard graft with a chisel, wire brush and sandpaper.


The paint was flaking badly. JK, masonry paint is the best to use on sills. If the sills were done in a gloss, and you use normal masonry paint to coat over them they will flake within months. Hi everyone, my exterior window sills are painted in gloss.


Paint usually peels from window sills and frames because of moisture. Water standing on the sills eventually penetrates the paint film. When it later evaporates, the pressure from under the film causes peeling. This moisture may be condensation on the interior, or rain and snow on the exterior. For me the best paint for your sills is sandtex paint.


To prep your sills , the wire brush would do the job but if the black gloss is two thick you may be better with a grinder with a wire brush on it. Before you paint them, I would unibond them first then paint them. Paint often flakes off window frames and window sills.


Repairing concrete window sills Check sills for cracks and crumbling. The experts agree that unless the concrete has fallen off, to the degree whereby the inner steel support is visible, repairs are always possible. If this does not remove the patina from the concrete window sill, purchase a concrete rust-removing product. Spray or apply it to the stain and then scrub the concrete clean.


Rust-removing products contain harsh chemicals that can damage the siding of the house under a window sill, and should only be used as a last resort. The front bay window sills on our victorian terrace need a bit of work and i wondered what the best way to go about it was. The first thing is all the paint is flaking off exposing the masonry underneath. Is it best to strip off all the paint with a sc. Stir the Window Sill paint thoroughly before starting and use a good masonry brush for painting.


Alternatively you can use a standard masonry paint on your sills and follow the same procedure. Top Tip: Run the paint brush along the ground first to remove any loose bristles. We hadn’t realized how much the original black paint had faded until we started to repaint the window sills. It’s such a quick and easy thing to do, but it makes such a difference. A friend at work has a house and the stones around the windows has been painted with masonry paint and he wants it removing.


He did around one window with an angle grinder, by cleaning all the old paint off, he used plenty of polythene and made a tent around the area, but the dust still went all over the house. Our external widow sills are pretty scabby looking. The masonry is fine but the paint is warped and blistered. When painting concrete window sills use an exterior masonry paint. They are the standard concrete window sills , and have not been painted for some years. Dust down and apply a coat of Stabilising Solution. If the cill dost not look as smooth as you would like, fill all the cracks, pits etc. Lay down a drop cloth in front of the window , and remove as much of the old paint as you can with a scraper.


My window frame was not peeling, so I only removed paint from the sill. Apply two coats of semi-gloss interior paint if you are painting an inside windowsill. Use a semi-gloss exterior paint for an outside windowsill. Allow a few days for the paint to dry and cure. Remove the rag and then scrape the silicone from the concrete with a sharp utility knife.


Keep the utility knife level as you scrape to avoid digging into the concrete and creating nicks. Apply water to the silicone if needed to soften the caulk as you scrape. Remove peeling paint or damaged woo using a scraper.


Clean the windowsill with a degreasing cleaner as paint will not adhere to dirt or grease. This item Biostrip Paint Stripper 500ml, paint remover.
