How to fix a tear in a waterproof jacket

Repairing a small hole or tear. You will need: Duct tape, seam sealant How to do it: Patch over with tape (do this on both sides if possible). A tear in any material of jacket is possible to fix with the right techniques. The easiest tears to repair are smaller tears , less than inches in length.


Take the jacket to a tailor or seamstress to have the tear stitched back together. This can help make for a stronger repair , but if you aren’t careful, you can further damage your jacket. All fabrics have a denier count.


If your jacket or pants are made of GORE-TEX, consider using a patch made specifically to repair GORE-TEX fabric. Because if you do any stitching on your performance jacket , you’ll perforate the laminate with little holes from the needle ruining any waterproof ability. To repair holes or small tears , there are special repair kits available for GORE-TEX fabrics. But before you go out and buy such a kit, take a look at which membrane your damaged apparel has.


Every fabric and all of the different colours. If the tear is small and straight, then you should be able to repair it very quickly and simply. It is not advisable to try and repair a large hole or tear with a regular needle and thread since the outer shell of the jacket is quite fragile. In these situations, the best solution is to send the jacket to an authorized professional. Depending on the damage, the repair is often a small price to pay compared to replacing the whole jacket.


Is your jacket a rain jacket or a baffled jacket (like a down jacket or Nano Puff)? The repair process for each is slightly different. I used Stormsure Waterproof repair glue (see Amazon) to repair a torn cycling jacket , an Aldi one but the basic material appears to be similar to the Altura. Anyone know how this can be fixed. To mend a torn seam, you must located and identify the tear , identify the type of fabric you are working with, choose the correct hand stitch to repair the seam with, or repair the garment with a machine.
